Fishing Expert Supreme

Cormorant in flight

I shot this cormorant flying across my local lake.  I see them daily but I am rarely close enough or quick enough to get a good shot.  This was still some distance away but I managed to get enough detail.  This is the fishing expert to beat all experts.  This makes the cormorant less than popular with anglers on the lake but there’s no denying this bird knows how to fish.  When they dive they disappear for absolutely ages and reappear a considerable distance away.  I imagine it must look like flying under water.  The UK is very important for wintering birds and they certainly seem to have grown in number this year.  I am always struck by how prehistoric this bird looks.  The heron also leaves me with the same impression.

Thank you. Nice shot of yours too. Not an easy bird to get close to and surprisingly quick for its size.

Beautiful. Birds are fascinating. Tomorrow night I am looking forward to the first screening of the BBC’s series “Earthflight”. It is especially timely as tomorrow our city has a special event to farewell the Godwits as they begin their annual trip back to Alaska.

How wonderful the city celebrates something like that.

Yes, when the godwits arrived for the summer the Cathedral Bells used to be rung. I am not sure what happens now because we haven’t had a cathedral since the earthquakes.
