Bees making a comeback

It seems from my experience that bees are making a comeback in the UK, I hope that is the case and I’m not fooling myself. There have been concerns over disease and poor weather and numbers plummeting in recent years.  Well, this year appears to be much better and it has been a joy to see flowers and bushes covered in them.

We seem to have same thing in the midwest US. More honeybees are on the cleome and sedum and other late summer perennials than I’ve seen in several years!

I’m not sure if the US had the same concerns as here about the bee population but it has been quite desperate for a couple of years now.

Hello, yes there has been concern in the US about colony collapse for nearly a decade now. Theories as to why range from mites and other parasites to the use of agricultural herbicide/pesticides. I’ve no proof or research, but I have noticed in my own garden the trend of literally no bees for a few years to a slowly increasing population. This year it seems almost back to normal. Let’s hope so!

    I hope you are right.

I hope so too. Yet another creature taken for granted until it is on the very edge before we do something. Such a vitally important one too.

I live in the US, in Southern Indiana and it has been a banner year for bee’s, I have photographed quite a few and been stung by almost that amount, great pic !!

Thank you. It seems nature does often have a way of recovering from the most desperate of situations if it’s allowed to.

    Good news!

Indeed it is. So easy to take these little creatures for granted but we’d be in big trouble without them.

I think they are on the rise this year. I’ve seen a lot more on my echinacea’s (like yours) and on buddleja bush this summer..

Yes, on occasion whole plants seems to be buzzing with them. I hope it is the case. We’ve had a good summer this year and I’m sure that has helped a lot.

I was just observing the same thing here in Canada, despite the news of them being on the decline. I have also noticed more bumble bees than ever!
    Beautiful photograph!
    Cheers, jessica

I had just recently arrived from from spending 6 weeks in the countrysides of the UK. I already miss all the beautiful scenery and history it had to offer. You live in a brilliant country!

Thank you. I’m always pleased to hear when someone has enjoyed a visit to the UK. I hope the weather was quite good for you. We tend to take our beautiful country for granted I think but we do have a lot in a small space and it’s very varied for a small country. Glad you liked it and hope you plan to come and see more.

The weather was fantastic! Never too hot, but always brilliantly sunny. Oh, I am definitely not done with your wonderful country.

        Pleased to hear it.

The same thing has happened here; hoping the bees I am seeing are a good sign.

I am glad you are seeing evidence of greater numbers of bees. I was very pleased to see some bumble bees out today. The first I have seen since autumn. I do as much as I can to make my garden bee- friendly.

I always believe it just takes everyone to do a little to make a big difference. I suppose you must be slipping in to spring and looking forward to all it holds and we are coming to the last few weeks of summer.

      • Gallivanta / Aug 16 2013 12:32 pm

Yes, slipping slowly. Today was lovely and spring seems just around the corner.

This is good news, and I hope you are right that bees are bouncing back. I really like your photo of two bees together doing their thing.
