Quiet backwater

Barges in the sun

Today has been a public holiday in the UK and we’ve enjoyed a beautiful warm sunny day (well we have where I live). This stretch of the canal is very much a quiet backwater and presented a lovely colourful scene as I walked along here this afternoon.

I agree. I walk the canals all year and in the winter, with the snow and ice, it looks a lot less attractive and appealing.

Looks the perfect place for a walk; with some sun and shade too. Do you get a little breeze off the water?

The canals were almost always cut into the landscape so they tend to be very sheltered. So not usually a breeze to be found. This sheltered nature gives the opportunity for lots of plants and wildlife to move in. I noticed yesterday the fruit that is growing wild along the bank is fantastic and I’ll be collecting some of it in a few weeks.

There is something really satisfying about picking wild fruit. There is plenty about this year.

Thanks for the like on our blog. Your photo brings back great memories from long ago when we rented one of those canal boats and slowly cruised up and down the Oxford Canal.
