Shining light

lighthouse

As I love the sea, wild places and peace, for many years, it was my dream to be a lighthouse keeper. Sadly they are all automated in the UK now. I still love to look and dream though.

If you haven’t read it, you might enjoy The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman. It’s a quick read of a novel, but it gives you an idea of the life of a lighthouse keeper.

A beautiful photo. That looks like the perfect spot to be a lighthouse keeper. But I guess automation is a good idea.

I love lighthouses, seeing one, especially in the evening, makes me feel very melancholy and at the same time (even if they are automated) comforted, because I know there’s someone out there. Coincidentally this goes back to a ferry ride from Zeebrugge to Newcastle, I had 2 cabin mates who snored. I spent the whole night outside and watched the lighthouses on the English coast pass by. 🙂

I too have a love affair with lighthouses and would feel so privileged to be in a position to live in one, but, sadly (or perhaps not so for the ship captains) they are all automated here in the States as well. Many of my friends know of my love for these unique structures and bring me all kinds of paintings, prints, photos, and knickknacks that are lighthouse themed. One couple gave me a painting as a gift several years ago, and it so captured my attention and imagination that I was forced to start writing about what I saw in the picture and just could not stop until I had an entire novel set at that lighthouse. It’s amazing how creativity begets creativity.

I love lighthouses too – visit all of them that I can. Even though automated here in the US, many still contain their original Fresnel lenses. Beautiful picture!
