The canal in autumn

the canal in autumn

A very peaceful tranquil place. Great in the summer but today it looked a little bit too damp and cold. Cosy with a coal fire going though I bet.

Where is this, and do people live on those boats?

It’s on the Stratford-Upon-Avon Canal in Warwickshire and yes, people live on the boats all year.

That is awesome. I think I saw this in a documentary one time.

The canal network in the UK is extensive and was once the major distribution route for goods; from the Victorian era up until the 1960s. The canals are now used for leisure and some people enjoy them so much, they live on residential boats like in the photo. They are usually very peaceful places and even when they pass through cities they are a green corridor and a great escape from the hustle bustle.

I love it! Sounds like a peaceful way to live, and move along a bit when the mood strikes.

That’s exactly what people do. Great lifestyle for managing stress.

Now that’s a coincidence – I was visiting a canal just yesterday! Not in such good shape as this one, I’m afraid…

Sadly some here are in poor repair but lots of work is being done to restore them.

Your caption took me by surprise. I have never even seen a coal fire.

Interesting how we all experience a different world. We had a coal/wood fire until fairly recently. I really miss it. There is nothing to compare with sitting in front of an open fire with a glass of whisky on a cold winter night. Heaven.
