At the beginning of 2013 I began this blog with the objective of recording every day with a photograph for 365 days. In the course of achieving that objective on December 31st 2013, I met lots of lovely people, who were kind enough to spend some time looking at my blog and commenting, and some enjoyed it that much they even decided to ‘follow’ to see what I’d get up to next. The pleasure was mutual, and so I continue to enjoy capturing and sharing some of my photographs and experiences, and enjoying those of others around the world. I always wanted to share with others how wonderful and extraordinary the ‘ordinary’ really is, and that remains one of my main reasons for doing what I do.

So far so good. It is a challenge though. I decided to do it to motivate myself to take more photographs, which I love doing. I have a range of kit but am never without a really good compact. For the purpose of the blog, that is fine. I use the DSLR for the blog less often because usually that has to be planned, as it involves carrying a bag of kit around and that’s not always possible. I am making no promises about the artistic merits of the photos, just capturing what’s around. If I was using it to sell or promote my work I would have a different approach. I am doing it primarily for me because I would like to have a record of the everyday stuff, something like a photo diary for a whole year. But it does seem to interest other people and that gives me a little more self discipline to keep it up. I have already found it a great record and I’m only into February. We shall see if I can keep it up. I can only give it my best.

It is charming in a very ordinary, unassuming way. It just sort of gets on with things. Nothing exciting but a nice place to just be.

I have found the creativity comes in cycles… usually between 6 to 8 weeks then I get that empty feeling. At first I stressed… now I know it’s the natural time to take a break…

Than you very much for your kind words. Very generous of you and I’m delighted to think I might have been able to give you some ideas on photography. I am a photographer of many years and just love taking shots. In terms of pointers, as you asked, I would say always have a camera to hand. Although I have bags of kit I don’t always carry it everywhere I go but I do pretty much carry my compact. Many of the shots on the blog were taken with the compact. Having said that, if you can afford it, save up for a good DSLR if possible and experiment with shooting in RAW, (or birthday/Christmas present). There are some excellent models that are great value because they are last years ‘must have’; they are still excellent and will serve you well for years. In addition to encouraging you to take lots of photographs of everything, especially the ‘ordinary’, I would say crop to get the shot and get a good editing program. Sorry if I went on but you did ask and I get very enthusiastic when anyone shows an interest in taking photos. The very best of luck with it. I’m sure you’ll have a great time. I’m looking forward to seeing your work. I think you’re in the Isle of Man, so a fantastic place for photography.
Heavens no, thank you for taking the time out to reply to me, I really appreciate it. I am currently using a Fujifilm FinePix S4400 Bridge camera as being in a wheelchair I am a little wary of taking the leap to a full on DSLR at the moment. I have epilepsy too, which is not controlled at the moment so a decent lens ending up on the floor is NOT on my list of things to do currently! I am getting (well, well, in my opinion) some shots which are not too bad with the bridge camera and am using Aviary, Snapseed, Tilt-Shift, LensFlare and TitleFx (all either 69p or free apps from Apple) and getting some results that I am very happy with. My husband has a super duper all singing all dancing Cannon DSLR, if I get asked to hold it I hold it like a bomb about to go off, I am that terrified of dropping it (it doesn’t help that I have inherited a clumsy gene along the line).
I am finding myself drawn to Aviary time and time again for editing software, as it has exactly what I need on it – crop, brightness, saturation and sharpness. It does have some ‘effects’ which occasionally lend themselves to the subject.
If you have time (and can wade through the pictures of my new corn snake) I have put a few new pictures up. It was genuinely a comment another photographer made that gave me the gumption to post a few of my own up (about 2 weeks ago).
I am in the Isle of Man, and am going out today, so hopefully will be able to post some pictures later on.

Looks like you are off to a flying start with today’s posts. I would just enjoy experimenting as you are. You clearly have ‘the eye’ for a good picture. I’m looking forward to seeing what you produce. Thank you so much for your kind words. I can crop using my own camera for now, but mainly on landscape and macro pictures. I am a bit wary of using my husband’s camera as it doesn’t have a strap as mine does and I am terrified of having a seizure when using it! I just post the world from my perspective (in a wheelchair) to hopefully show that it can be quite different. Maybe I should get a dedicated blog just for my photographs, and keep my usual one for my “waffling on”.
I’d agree with the two blogs idea. I think you have two different audiences for your photography and your writing. When one dries up you can always immerse yourself in the other.
You have definitely given me food for thought on that one, thank you very much. Although I don’t have many followers on my other blog, they have been with me since the beginning and I would love to show people the world from my perspective. My mind is made up, I shall send you the link once it is done. Is it bad form to post pictures that I have already posted on one blog on another if I am up front about it and why I have started a new one? I don’t think I have posted that many that it would be would it?
I think it would be okay as long as it wasn’t too many and the blog links for both can always be on your profile page. I think you would attract a bigger combined audience and they might be curious and cross from one to the other that way.
Well, I have done it! Any feedback always welcome as managing 2 blogs is going to be interesting. I have decided to be very upfront about what editing software I use, and post the RAW file followed by the edited one. Thank you for giving me the confidence to do so.
Good luck. I would monitor the RAW files as they can be huge and it will use up your valuable blog space.

I grew up in rural England, but have lived in Johannesburg, South Africa for the last 20 years – a far cry from the village life I was used to!! Your photos remind me of what I miss most about England and what I look forward to recapturing every time I return on holiday. Just everyday things – the birds, the countryside, the pubs, the high street etc. – nothing out of the ordinary, but things I miss! I have really enjoyed browsing through your photos and look forward to my daily dose of “home”.

You’ve captured what I wanted to achieve with the blog really; just recording the ordinary, which actually isn’t that ordinary at all and is really rather wonderful. It’s just that none of us appreciate how wonderful it is. I would appreciate a little South African sunshine though and maybe photograph some of the landscape and wildlife. Maybe one day I will but I’ll have to put up with the snow for now.
An interesting concept for an ongoing photo project. I have seen various permutations of this one, the most interesting being taking a photograph of the same spot or scenic view from the same angle either (1) at various times of day and night, or (2) the same view of the subject every day at the same time. The idea is to pick a subject or scenic view that somehow changes markedly as the day progresses or as some predetermined period of time passes. For instance, photograph your favorite tide pool every day at the same time, or at both high and low tide the same day, or over a period of 52 weeks. Hi. I haven’t read the Levy book, though I am familiar with it. The blog title was inspired by the Bill Bryson book ‘Notes From A Small Island’, which is a lighthearted travel book about Britain. A good and funny read if you haven’t read it. It’s a gentle, poking fun at the Brits book.
Hi! Ah, how could I forget about Bryson’s book :D. Yes, I have read it. He has nice humour, and it was good travel book. I would liked that he poked into less very specific details. It made book more difficult to read for me not being Brit. But in general I liked it:)
I think Bryson’s book was lovely, gentle, observational humour which played on the American/Brit relationship in which we have so much in common yet still manage to be very different and a mutual mystery on occasion. I agree that some of the idiosyncrasies of British life which were observed would make it difficult to follow unless one had spent a long time in the UK. It helps us Brits laugh at ourselves though, which is always a good thing.

So what do you call the heart of England? I was born in county Durham, raised in N. Yorkshire, married and moved to Dorset. After a brief spell in Germany I lived in Hampshire, then Kent. Since 1995 my home has been Colorado. It’s lovely here too. I think of all the places I lived in England, I miss Dorset the most.

I though of joining a 365project but wasn’t sure about the commitment. I want to improve my photography not just take a photo because I have to to fulfil a challenge. It is a commitment but I wanted to do it for me rather than anything else. It will serve as a photo diary. As with any diary it’s full of everyday stuff with the occasional bit of excitement but that’s normal life, which is what I want to capture. I also wanted the discipline of taking more photographs and searching for the beauty in the ordinary.

Thanks. I just take lots of photos as I go about my day. I always have a camera with me. Sometimes it’s a DSLR and all the kit on my back, sometimes it’s a compact in my pocket. I enjoy taking photos and would take them whether I posted or not and it’s a few seconds to post them on WP. Posting every day is my attempt to record my year with a photo diary. At the end of December I will probably post less often.
I really like that you state your objective at the beginning. Maybe I should have done that too (:p) but at the start, blogging was more about connecting with the inner world than the external one.

Thank you very much. I did start out with the intention of creating a photo diary for my own satisfaction and that still is the main purpose. If I can keep it up I will have a great record of a whole year to keep and share. However, I’m delighted so many people have also enjoyed stopping by. I really do enjoy seeing the beauty in everyday things and also having the chance to see what others around the world experience in their lives every day. I hope you’ll drop by again.

Well I hope it doesn’t spoil your travels and adventures too much by reminding you of home. I have travelled around quite a lot and came to the conclusion, there’s nowhere like home. Travelling is great and it’s wonderful to experience different cultures, languages and people. Just don’t forget those green rolling hills, Cadbury’s chocolate, wet Sunday afternoons and the BBC.
I know exactly what you mean, I love adventures, but you’re right, home is always the best! I am actually heading back for a visit next week, so very excited to get my fix of marmite and Stephen Fry!
